About the Organization

NUCFRLANMPE- National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-metallic Products Employees situated at NUCANMPE close, Rainbow Maritime Crescent, off Ijoko Road, Sango-Ota, Ogun State emerged as a result of the merger of two trade unions- National union of Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Employees otherwise known as NUCANMPE and Footwear Rubber and Leather Union otherwise known as FLR in 1996. The merger of the trade unions In Nigeria which resulted in pruning down of Trade union organizations from 42 to 29 was at the instance of a Decree 4 1996 of Federal Government of Nigeria.

Moreover, sequential upon the trade union’s amendment decree No 22 of 1978 which pruned down over one thousand house unions to 70 unions, NUCANMPE and FLR emerged and were administered separately as independent trade union organizations until 1996 when General Sanni Abacha-led regime requested for a compulsory merger of 42 Unions to 29. The merger was regarded as a punitive measure meted on labour organizations for their struggle against the annulment of June 12, 1993 election which M.K.O. Abiola supposedly won.

Prior to the merger NUCANMPE was a vibrant and strong trade union but FLR on the other hand was weak , this and other reasons like government legislation on Trade Union restructuring necessitated the merger in order for the former to give strength and life to the latter.
